Letter from the Editor #635: Why HRV Is Important

Many factors affect our cardiovascular health and these can be magnified when diabetes is involved. One often overlooked factor is Heart Rate Variability (HRV). When I first read this week's feature from Sheri Colberg, all I could think of was how high my heart rate goes when I get in a sprint on my bike. Now I know that there is a lot more value in HRV than I ever thought and in this week's feature Dr. Colberg shares why physical activity, yoga and stretching can make a lot of difference in our patient's diabetes care.

Two weeks ago we ran a special report on the effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC) with recently released guidelines from the Endocrine Society. This week we see exactly how chemicals can have a big effect with a new study from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) showing an association between increased concentrations of phthalates in the body and risk of diabetes in women. Find out here where these phthalates are.
