This week there is a wealth of information on new drugs for diabetes and weight loss; see FDA Approves Eli Lilly Diabetes Combo Drug Jentadueto, Efficacy and Safety of Bydureon Versus Metformin, Pioglitazone, and Sitagliptin as Monotherapy, and Obesity Drug to Get Broader Label. New research also shows how chemical deficiencies, Effect of Sitagliptin on Serum Total Ghrelin Levels in Type 2's, or genetic mutations, Gene Study Sheds Light on Body Clock's Link to Diabetes, may affect the development and control of diabetes.
Results were also released from the Diabetes Excess Weight Loss (DEWL) Trial showing an equivalent modest weight loss on what the authors stated was either a low carb (40% of calories) or high carb diet (55% of calories). Although those numbers seem real, note that most other low carb diets are more in the 20-25% range and that may account for the reason that the weight loss was equivalent and A1c's did not decrease. The more important information from the study was that there was no difference in body fatness, lipids, blood pressure and renal function using a lower carb diet.
