Children’s Cholesterol Improving

Aug 10, 2012

Cholesterol levels have improved slightly among American youth over the past two decades, according to new government data. From 1988 to 2010, the rate of high total cholesterol dropped from 11% to 8% in children ages 6 to 19. The levels of LDL cholesterol and fats in the blood also fell among adolescents over the study, which is based on nationally representative data on more than 16,000 youths. The report shows 22% of youths had either low HDL cholesterol or high non-HDL cholesterol between 2007 and 2010. That is down from 27% in 1988 to 1994. JAMA, online August 7, 2012
