Robert Stanton, MD: The Research on Low-Protein Diets and Kidney Disease

Dr. Stanton gives us his perspective on low-protein diets with a brief overview of the research and thinking behind these types of diets for patients with kidney disease, and highlights some of the ongoing questions and concerns in this area of study. He also discusses how many of the studies in this area of research have involved diabetes patients, and whether low protein diets could actually be harmful.

Dr. Robert Stanton is a Principal Investigator in the Section on Vascular Cell Biology and the Chief of the Nephrology Section at Joslin Clinic, as well as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Stanton’s laboratory focuses on understanding the causes of impaired G6PD enzyme activity to see whether prevention of this impairment helps prevent diabetic kidney disease and diabetic vascular disease.
