Vivian Fonseca, MD, is President, Medicine & Science of the American Diabetes Association, the nation's largest voluntary health organization leading the fight to Stop Diabetes®. He is also Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology, Tullis-Tulane Alumni Chair in Diabetes, and Chief of the Section of Endocrinology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA. He is also a staff physician at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare System.
Fonseca has been an American Diabetes Association volunteer for more than 15 years, having served as Chair of the Professional Practice Committee, as a member of the Research Policy Committee, and a previous term on the National Board of Directors. In 2011, he served as Editor-in-Chief of Diabetes Care, the journal for the health care practitioner that is intended to increase knowledge, stimulate research, and promote better management of people with diabetes. He is a member of the American Diabetes Association's Pinnacle Society and Summit Circle. These are recognition societies representative of individuals who are providing significant contributions to the Association through major gifts and their estate plans, respectively.
He is a fellow of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Royal College of Physicians (London), and the American College of Physicians.
Fonseca's research interests include the prevention and treatment of diabetic complications and risk factor reduction in cardiovascular disease. He is also an investigator in the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) study and serves on the Glycemia control committee. He is on the steering committee of “Targeting Inflammation with Salsalate in Type 2 Diabetes” (TINSAL T2D). He also served as editor ofClinical Diabetes: Translating Research into Practice, several monographs, and book chapters.
Fonseca has a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the Armed Forces Medical College in Poona, India, and earned his MD from Bombay University, India. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians London and is a Board Certified Endocrinologist.
