increase awareness among healthcare practitioners of the causes of mistakes involving insulin as well as strategies for preventing them.
We also would like to increase voluntary reporting of diabetes-related medication errors to our national reporting program to help increase real-time knowledge of what is occurring in practice, and encourage a more multidisciplinary healthcare team approach to medication safety in diabetic treatment. The information is shared with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and manufacturers where applicable, and we advocate for safety changes when appropriate.
Healthcare practitioners who would like more medication error prevention recommendations and resources can visit www.ismp.org. They also can direct their diabetes patients to www.consumermedsafety.org for medication safety tools and information specifically targeted to healthcare consumers.
