Diabetes Disaster Averted #16: ID Bracelet Prevents Trip to ER
I had a patient who was diabetic and on insulin. He was a young man who liked to go out on weekends. I stressed how he needed to wear a medical ID bracelet and he did purchase one....

One weekend he went out and forgot to eat but had some alcoholic drinks. He was wearing his medical ID bracelet and thankfully someone there gave him a soda when his blood sugar dropped dangerously low and prevented a potential trip to the ER. -- SF
Editor’s Note:
It may not be enough to have just a bracelet as often people don’t have any idea what to do. One of my patients had this inscribed on the back of his bracelet; If I appear drunk or about to pass out please give me sugar or soda and call 911. Although he has never had to call 911 he has had low glucose in the past. - DJ
