Walnuts Improve Cardiovascular Health for Those with Type 2 Diabetes

Walnuts Improve Cardiovascular Health for Those with Type 2 Diabetes: According to a new Diabetes Care study, eating 2 ounces of walnuts per day as part of a normal diet may improve cardiovascular health in people with Type 2 diabetes. Previous studies demonstrated the potential benefit of walnuts in promoting heart health in healthy adults, but none had examined the effect of walnuts in adults with Type 2 diabetes. This study, on Type 2's, examined the effect of walnuts on endothelial function -- a measure of how well blood vessels are able to dilate and increase flow, and a powerful predictor of overall cardiovascular risk. Interestingly, participants did not gain weight, which suggests that even people at risk of weight gain add walnuts into their daily diets. Diabetes Care February 2010 vol. 33 no. 2 227-232
