Type 1 Teenagers At Higher Risk for Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes

Type 1 Teenagers At Higher Risk for Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes: Glycemic control and pregnancy outcomes of teenagers with Type 1 diabetes were compared with older mothers with Type 1 diabetes to identify the glycemic control achieved by teenagers and its correlation with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Compared to older women, teenagers booked later to care in a sub-specialist diabetic/obstetrical service (at a median gestational age of 7 vs. 11 weeks) and had worse glycemic control throughout pregnancy despite receiving higher doses of insulin until week 36 of gestation. The rate of major congenital anomaly was higher in teenagers than in older women with Type 1 diabetes (6.2% vs. 3.2%). These data indicate that teenagers with Type 1 diabetes are at a higher risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Carmody, D. et al. Pediatr Diabetes 2010, 11(2): 111).
