A research team believes it has found the answer in fossilized feces. The prehistoric diet of people living in the Southwest appears to have led to the development of genes that store fat, called "thrifty genes." The new study suggests these genes developed in Native Americans because of what they ate and not because of a feast-or-famine scenario. If so, helping Native Americans return to eating habits that are closer to their prehistoric diet could benefit those with diabetes and help in preventing the disease. Current Anthropology July 2012 |
