It appears that the FDA and Congress are trying to deal a final blow to GSK’s Avandia. The legislators have spent hundreds of hours reviewing tons of research and have decided that GSK withheld info about the potential for problems. (See Item #1.) To their credit GSK has decided to mount a strong defense. It seems to me that although this is important, I just can’t grasp why the two sides of the Senate can’t work this well together on healthcare reform.
Patients are starting to use Victoza and now that the drug is starting to get exposure in non-controlled situations it will be interesting to see what the results are. Speaking of GLP-1 mimetics, the bad weather in DC has held up review of the Amylin’s once a week version of Byetta. It seems that all the snow last week shut down the FDA for 5 days and so the PDUFA of this new compound has been postponed till March 12th due to weather.
Michelle Obama has taken it upon herself to ramp up the campaign to stamp out childhood obesity. Our physical activity guru, Sheri Colberg, Ph.D., FACSM, decided to go at it from a professional standpoint and wants you to read Get Your Kids Moving, Too, and then print it out to hand to every parent you know.
