Letter from the Editor #642: Seinfeld, Shrinkage and Diabetes

Most of us have seen all of the episodes of Seinfeld enough times that a single word or phrase brings back memories. Just the mention of the name, "Newman," conjures up images of the overweight and probably pre-diabetic mailman who was Kramer's best pal and Jerry's arch-enemy. There was also the episode with the phrase, "Yes, they are real and magnificent," and, of course, don't forget about George and "shrinkage." This type of shrinkage is often treated with testosterone but a new study from the World Meeting on Sexual Medicine found that male diabetes patients who have depression don't benefit from the treatment for hypogonadism, and also don't show the improvements in A1c and other markers that the non-depressed males do.

We have a little more data this week about "shrinkage" but this time it deals with the brain: people whose blood sugar is on the high end of the normal range may be at greater risk of brain shrinkage that occurs with aging and diseases such as dementia.

Be sure to check your mailbox this weekend for a Special Edition on GLP-1 Analogs and Lifestyle Changes prepared by our current group of interns,  and learn how GLP-1's can help improve glucose levels and energy consumption.
