Letter from the Editor, #637: Should we be more aggressive in treating our newly diagnosed type 2 patients?

Steve, Andrew and I would like to extend a warm thanks to all the educators who stopped by our booth at the AADE meeting in Indianapolis. We are especially thankful to those of you who took the time to be interviewed by our publisher, and to the faculty and students from Butler University College of Pharmacy who worked in our booth.

We are reviewing a very interesting presentation about the value of diabetes education and the use of motivational interviewing and will be making this available to you soon.

Many of the presentations were focused on intensifying diabetes therapy from the start and it made me think back to a time when we moved so slowly at managing diabetes that we would wait six months before we even started metformin. Now a new study published in Clinical Endocrinology suggests that some drug-naive type 2 diabetic patients would benefit from early initial combination therapy of sitagliptin and metformim. This study will probably be one of many indicating we should get even more aggressive with our newly diagnosed patients.

The way the weather has been going this summer you may want to check out our new product – it's a new device that will keep your insulin cold for 3 to 5 days using the latest innovative technology.
