Letter from the Editor #634: Artificial Sweeteners and Obesity vs. Mortality

Last week in a class, three of my patients informed me that using artificial sweeteners actually caused weight gain and higher glucose levels and that it was better to use real sugar if you have diabetes. When I asked them why, I got a variety of answers that I am still trying to understand. If you have ever heard these comments from your patients you may want to read this week's Item #8 and learn what both the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes have to say about these non-nutritive sweeteners and their beneficial effects.

We also have a new study that shows that obesity does not add to mortality risk. Although the title talks about mortality there was significant information mentioned about the quality of life and the increased risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and the high cost of care for these patients as they grow older. Bottom line: it is not an option to give up on getting our patients to drop a few pounds.
