Letter from the Editor #596: Time to Walk the Walk

How many of you can say you practice what you preach when it comes to food and exercise? How about your office staff, can you say that most of them exemplify the ideals that you promote to patients? Do you think that we have accepted unhealthy food choices, lack of exercise, and obesity as the norm? According to Dr. Sheri Colberg, PhD, we have. In this week's feature, A Culture of Obesity? Time to Walk the Walk, she discusses the findings of a 20 year study and how our perceptions of what's "normal" have changed over the years.

We often start our patients on basal insulin because they need extra help controlling their glucose and then we increase that basal insulin even though they need help with prandial glucose control. We know we should start them on mealtime insulin but the fear of hypoglycemia often causes us to postpone that decision. Now we have a way to address mealtime excursions without the fear of hypoglycemia as the FDA has approved the use of BYETTA® (exenatide) with Insulin Glargine.
