Letter from the Editor: SGLT-2 Inhibitors, Animas Vibe at ADA, GLP-1 Survey

We are less than two weeks away from the American Diabetes Association's 71st Scientific Sessions in San Diego, and we are starting to get a glimpse of what is going to be on the agenda. In addition to multiple education sessions and data on the treatment of diabetes there are some new studies and products that are making their way to us ahead of time. Over the past two years there has been significant excitement about a new class of drugs know as sodium-glucose co-transporter (SGLT-2) inhibitors and this week we have an item from John R. White, PA, PharmD,  Washington State University and colleagues looking at the effectiveness of dapagliflozin that serves as a view of what's to come. (See this week's Item #11, More Information Showing Dapagliflozin Improves Glycemic Control).

The Scientific sessions often bring a lot of researchers and attendees from Europe and the rest of the world so we get to look at some things that are not yet available here in the US. One of these items is the new Animas Vibe, which joins the waterproof Animas pump with a Dexcom 7 plus CGMS to give patients proven better control of their diabetes. (See this week's Item #12, Animas' Glucose-Monitoring Insulin Pump with CGMS OK'd in Europe). This sensor will have the advantage of being able to stay in for 7 days, meaning less changes and calibration times.

The first issue of our new GLP-1 special series is now out so be sure you check out the comments from some of the leading clinicians on how they view the use of and the future of GLP-1 agonists for diabetes care. And then please click on the survey link to share your opinions and practice protocols so we can focus on what is important to you (and also get a chance to win a Kindle or Nook).
