Letter from the Editor: More Electronic Prescriptions and "The Question is, My Dear Watson, Why Did the Dog Not Bark?"

This week, a new study from Surescripts found that the use of electronic prescribing in 2010 increased by 72% over 2009, climbing to 326 million up from 190 million e-prescriptions in 2009. By the end of 2010, approximately 25% of eligible prescriptions were prescribed electronically, and 91% of all pharmacies could accept the electronic prescriptions. According to "The National Progress Report on E-Prescribing and Interoperable Healthcare," the number of prescribers routing prescriptions electronically grew from 74,000 to 234,000 representing 34% of all office-based prescribers and 36% of office-based physicians in 2010. This has made it both easier for prescriptions to get filled and taken the guesswork out of "mystery handwriting" from harried prescribers.

A couple of weeks ago, Dr. Aaron Vinik, MD, Phd, FCP, MACP, finished a review of 351 U.S. residents who have survived with Type 1 diabetes for at least 50 years. He was looking to find out why these "diabetes veterans" have very few complications, and what he found may be contradictory to everything we've learned.
