FDA Approves Two Generics of Clopidogrel (Plavix)

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved 2 generic versions of the ubiquitous anticoagulant clopidogrel (Plavix, Bristol-Meyers Squibb/Sanofi). It is one of the best-selling drugs indicated for patients who have had a recent heart attack or stroke or who have peripheral artery disease or acute coronary syndrome. 

Zithromax (azithromycin): FDA Statement on risk of cardiovascular death

FDA notified healthcare professionals that it is aware of the study published in The New England Journal of Medicine May 17, 2012 reporting an increase in cardiovascular deaths, and in the risk of death from any cause, in persons treated with a 5-day course of azithromycin (Zithromax) compared to persons treated with amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, or no drug. The FDA is reviewing the results.
