MEDICARE
DIABETES THERAPEUTIC SHOE PROGRAM

FOOT SOLUTONS is pleased to announce they have received Medicare approval to participate in the Medicare Diabetes Therapeutic Shoe Program. This is good news for you and your diabetes patients as they may be eligible through this program to receive a pair of depth shoes and three (3) pairs of multi-density molded inserts that provide support and protection against pressure that could cause foot lesions. Medicare reimburses 80% of the allowable cost for qualified participants, with the patient or secondary insurance paying 20% co-pay after deductibles are met each calendar year. The Therapeutic Shoe Bill was passed in 1993 to help prevent foot health complications for at-risk patients. It is estimated that half of the amputations performed on diabetics could have been prevented with properly fitted shoes.

Who qualifies?
Patients enrolled under Medicare (Part B) who are on a comprehensive treatment plan that requires therapeutic shoes and have one or more of the conditions:
Peripheral neuropathy with evidence of callus formation
History of pre-ulcerative calluses
Foot deformity
Previous amputation of the foot or part of the foot
Poor circulation
History of previous ulceration

What does The Shoe Program cover?
Medicare will cover the following products during each calendar year:
1. One pair of depth shoes and three pairs of multi-density moldable inserts, or
2. One pair of custom-molded shoes and two additional pairs of customized inserts.

What covered products does Foot Solutions offer? A variety of extra-depth shoes designed with a deep, rounded toe box and a wide shank to accommodate the foot, as well as a long medial counter for rear foot stability, support and balance. Qualifying shoes featured at Foot Solutions include those from top orthopedic shoemakers Apex, Drew, P.W. Minor and Pedors. We also carry Pedors diabetic multi-density inserts that we heat-mold to the patient’s foot. Our staff at Foot Solutions are trained pedorthists.

What is the process?
1. The patient will need a physician’s (MD or DO) certifying statement stating he/she has diabetes, they are being treated, and the patient needs therapeutic shoes. We have enclosed those forms for your patients along with brochures on the program.
2. The patient will need a prescription from you, their MD or DO. This prescription in on the lower part of the enclosed form.
3. The therapeutic shoes must be supplied and fitted by a podiatrist, pedorthist, or other qualified individual. Foot Solutions provides this service, and we can process the Medicare claims on behalf of your patients.

We are thrilled to be able to offer this service to your diabetic patients. We look forward to working closely with you to ensure the best care of your patients’ feet in the foot wear they purchase.
