AADE HIGHLIGHTS

Dave Joffe, Editor in Chief

We just got back from the AADE conference in Philadelphia. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth.

Our Publisher, Steve Freed, R.Ph., was one of the presenters at a Friday morning symposium New Chromium Combinations:  Improving Glucose and Cholesterol Control through Nutrition”

500 of your colleagues got up at 6 am to learn about chromium and diabetes and see some of the early data from the PEP study. We at DIABETES IN CONTROL were the main recruiters for the study and the preliminary results that those of you who chose to participate have provided were discussed. Mean Fasting Blood Glucose, in 70 participants with an average age of 54.3 dropped 25.2%, from 155mg/dl to 116.2 mg/dl in 90 days. Mean Post Prandial Glucose in that same group dropped 27.3% from 205.5 to 149.14.  We will have more on this next week.

We gave away more than 1000 of Dr Bernstein’s book “ The Diabetes Solution”. Dr Bernstein was there to sign and at times the wait was 30 minutes. He even took a few pictures with some of the participants. This book giveaway and signing was made possible by a grant from BAYER Diagnostics.  Dick Bernstein will be back next year with his new book and also to do a symposium in Salt Lake City at 2003 AADE.

FITNESS QUEST helped us find the MOST FIT educator and manufacturers rep at the conference. The contest measured the most calories burned in 5 minutes. The winners were Rick Philbin, Animas Corporation, with 137 calories and Christine Steinhauser, diabetes educator from Kearney, Nebraska, with 112 calories.  More about the winners and pictures in next week’s edition.  They won the ELLIPITICAl ECLIPSE and the Recumbent Bike

David Goldberg, with Diabetes In Control and the developer of BetaFast Glucose Balance was the overall winner in the Novo 5K run with a time of 20:10
